Our Members
Notes from the Chair
Dear SIGDOC Member,
I hope to have the opportunity to see many of you at this year's SIGDOC
2006 Conference (see http://www.sigdoc2006.org). As you can see by the
notes of our General Conference Chair, Dr. Shihong Huang, we have an
incredibly exciting conference organized for everyone: Action-packed
proceedings, juggling Program and Local Arrangements Chairs, breathtaking
guest speakers, award-winning award winners, and a cornucopian concert
of stimulating conversation.
Since you're probably now aware of the "technical" details
of the conference, I take it as an honor to be able to introduce you
to some of the less technical aspects of our Myrtle Beach conference
location. You may already be aware but just in case, Myrtle Beach, South
Carolina, is the home of...
- the Waccamaw and Winyah Indians who named the region Chicora, translated
unassumingly as "the land."
- Sports Illustrated magazine
(1953)
- the country group, "Alabama"
- unfortunately, Hurricane Hazel (1954),
suggesting that the first two years of Sports Illustrated magazine
were rocky ones.
And, as an added bonus, South Carolina's state dance is the Shag, the
peach, and the home of Clayton "Peg Leg" Bates (Fountain Inn,
SC). For those of you unfamiliar with Clayton, after losing his leg in
a cotton gin accident at the age of 12, Peg Leg became a famous dancer
known in particular for his "Imitation American Jet Plane," in
which he would jump five feet in the air and land on his peg leg, with
his good leg sticking out straight behind him. During his career, Peg
Leg performed more than 20 different times on the Ed Sullivan television
show.
Until you attend an international conference somewhere, you can never
really know a place.... Hope to see "y'all" in sunny Myrtle
Beach, SC.
Best,
Brad Mehlenbacher

Our Members :: Notes from the SIGDOC 2006
General Chair, Shihong Huang
Dear Colleagues:
After nearly one year’s preparation, the 24th ACM International
Conference on Design and Communication (SIGDOC 2006) is in its final
preparation stage and is getting ready for the big event on October 18-20,
2006 in the beautiful Myrtle Beach, SC. I would like to take this opportunity
to give you an update of the status of the conference preparation. As
the General Chair of SIGDOC 2006, I sincerely invite all of you to participate
in SIGDOC 2006. Please visit conference Web site (http://www.sigdoc2006.org/index.cfm)
for detailed information. Online conference registration (http://www.regonline.com/Checkin.asp?EventId=105367)
has been activated. To take the advantage of the discount rate of Advanced
Registration, please register before October 1, 2006. If you missed the
Advanced Registration, you could always register later, but at a slightly
higher rate. For those who would catch up the last minute registration,
SIGDOC 2006 will provide the convenient on-site registration at the conference.
Technical Program has been posted. You can see from the technical program
that we have an exiting collection of technical papers, workshops, keynote
and invited speakers from both academia and industry. All these technical
papers have been through vigorous peer-reviews to make sure the high
quality of the conference proceedings. The assembly of conference proceedings
is finished and is on its way to the printer.
We are working diligently to make sure our local arrangements provide
a comfortable and efficient conference environment for you to exchange
research and practice results and ideas, and to meet with old friends,
colleagues, and new people.
SIGDOC 2006 could have never been a reality without the hard work of
everyone who volunteered numerous hours of their time. For that, I am
deeply indebted to many people. First and foremost, our Program Co-chairs,
Rob Pierce and John Stamey, have been working tirelessly from soliciting
technical papers and workshop proposals, for guiding the review process,
for setting the technical programs, and for working with the authors
and publisher Sheridan Printing to ensure the publishing process was
going on schedule.
I would like to express my gratitude to Steve Sheel for his work in
handling the local arrangement in Myrtle Beach. Local arrangements are
the visible face of the conference. I hope that besides the SIGDOC 2006
technical program, the nutrition breaks, reception, and the banquet are
part of the SIGDOC 2006 experience that attendees could bring back with
them.
I also appreciate that Dixie Goswami and Carolyn Miller kindly accepted
being the co-recipients of the Rigo award, Prof. Yuzuru Tanaka for giving
the keynote, and Drs. Klaus Jantke and Nicolas Spyratos for giving invited
talks. We are honored to have their participation.
Many thanks to the ACM for their continued sponsorship of SIGDOC, and
to Florida Atlantic University, IBM Corp, and Coastal Carolina University
for their gracious support, without which the conference would not have
been possible.
My thanks also go to the PC members for reviewing papers, and many volunteers
who make the conference a comfortable environment. Finally, I’d
like to thank SIGDOC Chair Brad Mehlenbacher for his constant support
and involvement in organizing of the conference. His suggestions and
guidance in part lead to the success of the SIGDOC 2006.
A great conference needs to have great participants. I encourage all
of you to participate in this great event – SIGDOC 2006.
I hope to see you all in the conference, and wish you have a great time
in Myrtle Beach!
