Our Members :: Notes from the Chair

Dear SIGDOC Member,

I'm absolutely delighted to begin my term as Chair of ACM SIGDOC and really appreciate the opportunity that you've given me to serve a community that has brought me so many fruitful collaborations and stimulating relationships with colleagues across disciplines and borders over many years. My term follows that of current Past Chair, Scott Tilley, and I'd also like to take this opportunity to thank Scott for his leadership and hard work over the past two years. I would also like to thank all the SIG officers and the advisory board members for their on-going service and commitment to the organization.

Now in its 23rd year, the annual ACM SIGDOC Conference is one of the highlights of our organization's activities. This year's theme, "Documenting & Designing for Pervasive Information," and the location in Coventry, UK, are two new and exciting aspects of the conference.

Advance registration (www.sigdoc.org/2005/registration.html) for the ACM SIGDOC 2005 Conference (www.sigdoc.org/2005) ends on September 9, 2005. As a member of SIGDOC, your active participating in the conference will make a big difference in the success of the event, so I encourage you to make arrangements to join me in Coventry, UK, from September 21-23, 2005.

The Program Chair, Bob Newman, has done a tremendous amount of work to make the ACM SIGDOC 2005 Conference a success and this is a wonderful opportunity for you to engage with the SIGDOC community. The Diana Award will be presented to the British Computer Society and will be accepted on their behalf by Dr. Wendy Hall, well known for her pioneering work on industrial-strength hypermedia. Her keynote-acceptance presentation will be an event worth attending. The conference banquet will be held in Stratford-on-Avon (Shakespeare's birthplace) -- keep an eye on the conference Website for details. More information concerning the ACM SIGDOC 2005 Conference Program (www.sigdoc.org/2005/program) is also available on the conference Website.

If you're interested in learning more about the ACM SIGDOC, please don't hesitate to e-mail me at chair_sigdoc@acm.org. We're always searching for creative volunteers to energize our activities and our organization. Below, I've listed my NC State faculty program affiliations (and promise never to do that again :-) to highlight my personal interest in multidisciplinary research and practice, and as a way of inviting you to begin new conversations about ACM SIGDOC with colleagues outside your area of specialization: At last month's ACM-SIG Board Meeting in NJ, I was delighted to have folks from four or five ACM SIGs approach me and begin an exchange following the sentence, "We need to be talking to your SIG about our mutual interests and activities." These interactions are critical to our continued growth and on-going vitality as a SIG. See you in Coventry!

Best,
