Our Members :: Notes from the Chair

In the last newsletter I mentioned that the SIGDOC 2004 conference was already well into the "Call for Papers" (CFP) stage. I'm happy to say that things have been progressing nicely since then. The Program Chair, Shihong Huang, has more details on the conference in this newsletter. Given the strong response we had to the CFP, I think the technical program revolving around the theme of "The Engineering of Quality Documentation" will be very strong indeed.

I'm pleased to tell you that SIGDOC was again declared "viable" by the ACM SIG Governing Board this past March. I presented an update of SIGDOC to the other ACM SIG Chairs. (There are about 33 other ACM SIGs, most of which are larger than us.) I spoke about SIGDOC's goals and activities, its membership and finances, and its plans for the future. The vote was unanimous in our favor. This means the SIG itself is in good shape until its next review in 2008. This was a big accomplishment for SIGDOC, so I'm very proud of how things turned out.

SIGDOC personnel are all volunteers, and we're always looking for help. If you'd like to get involved with SIGDOC, please send me email (stilley@cs.fit.edu). Preliminary plans are already being made for the SIGDOC 2005 conference. We'd welcome your contribution!

One last point: don't forget to plan your travel for SIGDOC 2004 in Memphis soon! See www.sigdoc.org/2004 for more details.

Notes from SIGDOC 2004 Program Chair

The SIGDOC 2004 Conference has traveled over halfway towards its destination. Since the first conference organizers' meeting, and the first distribution of the Call for Papers (CFP) in October 2003 in San Francisco, the conference preparation has made steady progress. I am happy to see that we are basically following our predefined schedule, and I am confident that we will have a very successful conference in Memphis - the home of the Blues and the birth place of Rock 'n' Roll. I'd like to take this opportunity to give you an update of SIGDOC 2004 progress.

First of all, I would like to thank our conference organizers and dedicated Program Committee (PC) for their invaluable work and contributions. They have devoted a lot of time to soliciting papers, setting budget estimates, providing local arrangements, and reviewing papers. The success of SIGDOC is really a community effort.

The SIGDOC 2004 Web site (www.sigdoc.org/2004) is up and kept current. It serves as a window to the community into the conference activities, showing what is happening in the conference and what is coming next. Please keep visiting it to track the conference as it unfolds over time.

I'm very pleased that we received a good volume of submissions this year: 55 paper abstracts from both academia and industry. Thanks to all the PC members for sending in their reviews. I'm in the process of putting the reviews together, after which the authors will be notified of the
recommendations of their papers shortly.

We also received several workshop proposals. The final decision on workshops will depend on how many papers will be accepted, and whether we have single track or two tracks in parallel for technical presentations.

Many thanks to our Local Arrangement Chair, Mike Albers, for his excellent work in Memphis. The conference will be held in the Fogelman Executive Center at the University Memphis. The conference hotel is the Holiday Inn Memphis, which is located right on campus. The room cost is $95 (plus 15.95% room tax) per night for a two-room suite. Conference registration includes
continental breakfast and buffet lunch each day during conference. The conference banquet will be held on Beale St. at the Rum Boogie Cafe. The early registration deadline is on September 9, 2004 to receive the great conference rate. Registration information will be available on the
conference Web site shortly.

That's all for now. I will keep you well informed concerning the progress of SIGDOC 2004 in the next newsletter and as the conference gets closer. I'm looking forward to seeing you all in Memphis!
