SIGDOC Newsletter
March 2005
:: Volume 6, Number 1
Our Members :: Notes from the Chair
Dear SIGDOC Member,
As we begin 2005, SIGDOC has a number of important activities that should
be of interest to you. The first is the 2005 conference, which is now
into the "Call for Papers" stage. The SIGDOC 2005 conference
will take place Sept. 21-23 in Coventry, UK. As I said in the last newsletter,
this marks the first time that the conference will be held outside of
North America. I'm extremely please that Bob Newman is the Program Chair
for the conference. More details on this exciting event can be found
online at www.sigdoc.org/2005, and elsewhere in this Newsletter. Please
start your planning now, to submit a paper or workshop proposal, and
of course to travel to Coventry to participate in the conference itself.
Speaking of conferences, the main SIGDOC Web site has been updated to
include the dates and locations of all of our past conferences, all the
way back to 1982. If you have cover art from some of these earlier events,
I'd welcome a copy to use on the Web. I'm also trying to fill in the
names of the conference General and Program chair(s) for each year. Please
see www.sigdoc.org/conferences for details.
If you were not able to attend the 2004 conference, the complete Proceedings
were published by ACM Press and are available online through the ACM
Digital Library. Just click on the image of the Proceedings on the www.sigdoc.org/conferences
page to access the complete table of contents for the event. There's
a lot of great papers that are available to you using this mechanism.
In fact, at the recent ACM SIG Governing Board meeting in Chicago, the
ACM informed all the 35 SIGs that revenue from the Digital Library continues
to grow at a very healthy rate. This revenue stream is a great boon to
the smaller SIGs, like SIGDOC, since it helps fund our activities. But
people only download papers that they find useful from the Digital Library,
which is why it's so important to keep writing those great papers for
our conferences! This is yet another not-so-subtle nudge to start preparing
your submission to SIGDOC 2005. :)
Approximately 2/3 of the ACM SIGs are holding elections this year, and
SIGDOC is no different. Very shortly you should receive a postcard in
the mail from ACM headquarters listing this slate of candidates for the
elected officers of the SIGDOC Board. Actual voting will take place online,
following the instructions included on the card. SIGDOC's current policy
is for elected officers to serve two-year terms, beginning July 1. For
the 2005-2007 term, the candidates for SIGDOC are as follows:
* Chair:
- Scott Tilley, Florida Institute of Technology
- Brad Mehlenbacher, NC State University
* Vice Char:
- Robert Pierce, IBM Corp.
- John Stamey, Coastal Carolina University
* Secretary:
- Jason Swarts, NC State University
- Ashley Williams, Neogenesis Pharmaceuticals, Inc.
See http://www.acm.org/sigs/elections/ for more information.
All of these folks are volunteering their time and effort to help make
SIGDOC a superb organization. As a SIGDOC member, your vote is crucial
in helping determine our shared future. Please look for the postcard
and vote for the candidate of your choice for each of the three elected
positions.
I'd like to thank Michael Albers for putting this slate together. He
was the Nominating Committee chair for this election.
Looking a little farther out, SIGDOC has agreed to be a co-sponsor for "The
Second Asia Information Retrieval Symposium" (AIRS 2005: October
13-15, 2005; Jeju Island, Korea). We are also working with some of our
fellow SIGs (e.g., SIGWEB and SIGECOMM) to coordinate our efforts for
working with the W3C on the WWW conference in 2006/7/8. I think these
partnerships will be tremendously beneficial to SIGDOC in bringing new
ideas to our members, and in getting the word out regarding SIGDOC to
a new group of potential members.
As always, I'd like to thank the Editor, Rob Pierce, for his tireless
efforts in making the SIGDOC Newsletter such a welcome member benefit.
Remember that this is your SIG, and I always welcome your input and participation.
Please drop me a note anytime.
