Notes from the Chair

Dear SIGDOC Member,

The results of the election of SIGDOC executive board members for 2007-2009 have been tallied by the ACM. The following members represent you as the new board for July 1, 2007 - June 30, 2009:

Chair: Brad Mehlenbacher, NC State University

Vice-Chair: Rob Pierce, IBM Corporation

Secretary/Treasurer: Shaun Slattery, DePaul University

I'd like personally thank each of the other candidates for putting their names forward for consideration in this election. Without your on-going interest and involvement, we'd not have an organization or an election for that matter. Also, thank you especially to Kathy Haramundanis for serving as Nominations Chair for the entire process. Finally, I wanted to encourage you to thank Ashley Williams for her tireless commitment to our organization in her capacity as Secretary/Treasurer over the last two years. Not only did she organize and manage the ACM SIGDOC budget, but she also completely redesigned a user-centered version of the SIGDOC Website (www.sigdoc.org), *and* managed to find the time to document our board meetings in-between projects. Ashley, we're delighted to continue working with you in your new capacity as Information Director, working with the ACM and coordinating additions and improvements to our existing and future society information infrastructure.

This year's ACM SIGDOC 2007 conference is being held in El Paso, Texas from October 18th to the 20th (see www.sigdoc2007.org). David Novick (General Chair) and Clay Spinuzzi (Program Chair) have been working tirelessly bringing together an international program committee and receiving incoming paper proposals for the conference. The keynote speaker at the conference will be Dr. Michael Muller, an international expert in participatory design, and a research scientist and design researcher with the Collaborative user Experience group at IBM Research, Cambridge, MA. The conference banquet will feature Dr. Judith Ramey, who will accept the ACM SIGDOC Diana Award for lifetime organizational achievement related to communication design on behalf of the University of Washington's Laboratory for Usability Testing and Evaluation or LUTE.

Looking forward to a terrific year! And, in the meantime, happy summertime eh,

INTECOM: "Transformation 2007": A Report on the AGM Meeting in Minneapolis, MN

Dear SIGDOC Member,

The 2007 INTECOM Annual General Meeting (AGM) was held on May 17th following the Technical Communication Summit—the 54th Annual Conference of the Society for Technical Communication in Minneapolis, MN. It was an honor for me to attend this meeting as your new voting U.S.A. delegate (replacing Stephanie Rosenbaum). Nine others were also present: (photo (front row)): Paula Berger (STC Immediate Past President, USA, Representative), Susan Burton (STC Executive Director, USA), Linda Oestreich (STC Incoming President, USA), Suzanna Laurent (STC Outgoing Past President, USA), Gloria Reece (ACM SIGDOC, USA Delegate); (photo (back row)): Jurgen Muthig (tekom, Germany Delegate), Kaye Churches (TCANZ, New Zealand, Delegate), Michaël Steehouder (IEEE/PCS, Germany), Leo Adank (STIC, INTECOM Treasurer, The Netherlands), and Michael Fritz (tekom Executive Director, Germany).

Suzanna Laurent presided over the meeting. During the meeting, we held discussions about the future of INTECOM. (The need for such a discussion became clear during an earlier meeting in Guernsey in 2006.) At the Minneapolis meeting, the delegates agreed that INTECOM should focus more on its core business of being a platform for the exchange of information and ideas between national and international organizations in technical communication. Moreover, the structure and working procedures of INTECOM also needed to be less formal.

As the result of the Minneapolis meeting, the delegates provided direction for a proposal for INTECOM’s future. The proposal covers objectives, polices, and procedures. We also discussed content for the proposal via e-mail with participation from member societies. The proposal has also been sent to ACM SIGDOC Chair, Dr. Brad Mehlenbacher for discussion with the SIG’s governing board. Instructions for providing feedback on the proposal prior to the November meeting are given in the correspondence and proposal. A final discussion and formal voting will take place during an extra (short) AGM to be held at Wiesbaden (Germany) on November 6, 2007. This meeting will be adjacent to the tekom Conference. For additional information regarding the meeting, proposal content, and formal vote, please contact Michaël Steehouder.

Digital storytelling and development of new media products for mobile media are areas where I have expertise. The digital story above captures some of the highlights of my first trip to Minneapolis, MN.
