Memphis City Overview

Memphis is the Home of the Blues and the birth place of Rock 'n' Roll. Life in Memphis has so many attractions -- night clubs on Beale Streets, good restaurants, museums, and a lot of more. From the holy grails of music landmarks to the good restaurants, from the basketball court to the mystical nightclubs on legendary Beales Street, there is an irresistible soul that drawn people to this 185 years old city. For those of you arriving at SIGDOC on Saturday to take advantage of lower airfare rates, Memphis offers a wide selection of tourist stuff to do. You will need a car to get to all of these places.

Memphis Sightseeing

Memphis Chamber of Commerce gives you a good overview of the city.

Memphis Zoo has two giant pandas from China. Giant Panda Ya YaIt is one of only a few U.S. zoos that China has agreed to loan them to. Come to visit these two playful and cuddly babies.

Graceland is the home of Elvis Presley. This "King's" estate includes his mansion, private jets, Meditation Garden, customized automobile collection, and much more. Expect some lines.

Sun Studio This recording studio is the roots of Rock'n Roll that gave Elvis, Jerry Lee Lewis, and Johnny Cash their start.

Beale Street Day TimeBeale Street. One of American's most famous musical streets! The location of Tuesday night conference banquet. It's sort of a smaller version of Bourbon St in New Orleans. But Beale has lots of blues music. And if you go, eat the ribs at the Blues City Café. Come to discover the distinctive flabour of "Beale-by-day".

Stax records. Recording studio for lots of jazz artists.

Gibson guitar factory. It's right beside Beale St. A factory where you can witness hand-craftsmanship at its best how solid blocks of wood are transformed into legendary musical instruments. On the factory floor with $4 million of guitars.

Memphis Museums

The Art Museum of University Memphis specializes in ancient Egypt.

Civil Rights Museum. It's built around the hotel where Martin Luther King, jr was shot. Pink Palace

Pink Palace. An eclectic mix of everything. This museum features culture and history exhibits unique to the Mid-South as well as a Planetarium and IMAX Theater. This is the closest of them all to the University. Just a mile or so walk from the hotel.

Brooks Art museum. Set in the city's historic Overton Park. It's the region's oldest and largest museum. Collections include paintings, prints, and sculptures spanning the 13th through 20th centuries.
