ABSTRACT:

Traditionally in printed documentation, technical editors ensured consistency--in voice, grammar, and terminology. As publications departments have moved online,  the role of the editor has expanded. Multimedia documentation is currently favored for presenting technical information. Editing multimedia documentation requires an even wider scope of skills. An editor's knowledge of information architecture is critical for assessing which information is best suited to be presented in multimedia, and for integrating the entire documentation set. Understanding storyboards and how images work with text is another important skill. An editor's keen ear--and eye--can help tailor an audio track that supports the multimedia images and reinforces additional text.
