ABSTRACT:

Today's databases offer features that can be used to manage large-scale documentation systems and produce web-based navigation and search interfaces. Yet database technology is uncharted territory for many information development groups.

This paper demystifies the subject, by:

  •  Illustrating the use of a database to produce a complete online experience.
  •  Explaining the components needed to produce a database-backed web site.
  •  Discussing some of the design, implementation, and performance considerations involved.

The paper shows how approaches used in traditional "data mining" database applications can be applied to the challenges of information development, in both the authoring and delivery phases.
